Leadership Strategies for Recruiting, Supporting, and Retaining Special Education Educators
Course Description
This course equips school and district leaders with a comprehensive, systems-based approach to strengthening special education teacher retention through the Get SET Nebraska initiative. Participants will examine national and state data on teacher shortages and turnover, analyze the root causes of attrition, and evaluate how school climate and leadership practices influence retention outcomes. The course emphasizes recruitment and hiring through a retention lens, the development of effective induction and mentorship systems, and the creation of meaningful professional growth and support structures. Through guided reflection, planning activities, and application of research-based tools such as the NIRN Hexagon Tool and the NeMTSS Problem-Solving Framework, participants will design and implement a data-informed, context-specific special education teacher retention plan tailored to their school or district.
